This class will focus on the ‘nuts and bolts’ of writing for older elementary and middle school students who need a slower pace to solidify their basic writing skills. Emphasis will first be placed on creating solid paragraphs. The pacing will then follow the students’ abilities. When they master the basic skills, students will be advanced to multiple paragraphs later in the year.
The Jac Kris Series will be utilized including some Winning at Writing and Growing with Grammar. Students will learn to structure writing by incorporating the TBEAR paragraph model (Topic-Background-Evidence-Analysis-Return To Topic).
A weekly grammar component will be incorporated in class instruction, as well as direct writing instruction. A variety of writing genre to be covered with an emphasis on how to think about, organize, and plan writing. Writing genre to include informative, narrative, and persuasive. We will do basic oral presentations and how to address a writing prompt in a test situation.
There is not a literature component to this class, as the focus is the mechanics of writing. Homework will be minimal at least for the first semester. Parents choose how much of the grammar to complete at home.
